Sleeve Props
Royal Academy of Arts Communities Programme x Look Ahead Residents
April - October 2024
Sleeve Props is a collaborative project with 15 Look Ahead residents and artist Lucie Macgregor, developed through a series of creative exchanges exploring fabric and paper cutouts. We began by returning images of gestures and hands to the groups, allowing them to be used at various scales for collage and reflection; these images, often cropped and gestural, were initially intended as research and recording rather than final objects, creating opportunities to discuss, cut, and respond.
Other moments of exchange were captured using expired darkroom paper, wrapped around hands to record fingers pressing and moulding, preserving the traces of interaction. In the exhibition space, the frames were arranged in a zig-zag formation to hold the responses, inviting interaction, bending, and looking through, creating a tactile and participatory environment where materials, gestures, and responses could be explored collectively.
