Gestures of Practice
Developing a new workshop offering - ‘gestures of practice’ as a kind of visual sense-making exercise
Drawing from a set of cards I’d made titled Pair or Pears, in which reworked images found in instructional books are made into cards to be played with as a game of ‘pairs’. Players turn them over to find pairings based on the visual steps in the instructions that they can gather from their cropped form. In its workshop context, I invited groups to explore a variety of books I have collected to see what resonated.
Pairings cut out and reworked into cards could be symbolic or literal, becoming a space to question the boundaries between the personal and universal, the instructional and the intimate. There’s also something there about the mediums > performative < potential but am still thinking through that.

Day School Arts - East Bristol Contemporary
Eva ran a session for Day School Arts, Bristol with the 2023 - 24 group of artists. The group created their own set of cards that were reflective of their 'gestures of practice'.
The workshop ended with games 'knots' 'catch the dragons tail', taken from the 1970's book New Games, play hard, play fair, nobody hurt.
