Gestures of Practice
Gestures of Practice is an interactive workshop I offer, designed as a visual sense-making exercise. Using a set of reworked cards from my ongoing project Pairs / Pears, participants engage with instructional images drawn from craft and exercise books, reimagined as a playful game of pairing.
In the workshop, participants -
Turn over cards to discover visual 'pairings' based on the steps and gestures captured in the images.
Explore a curated selection of books to see which images resonate with their own experience.
Experiment with combining and interpreting pairings, symbolic or literal, to uncover connections between the personal and universal, the instructional and the intimate.
The workshop creates a space for reflection, creativity, and collaborative discovery, encouraging participants to engage with process, material, and play in a way that is both performative and exploratory.
Whether for schools, creative collectives, or professional groups, Gestures of Practice invites participants to reimagine instructional materials as tools for experimentation and conversation.

Eva ran a session for Day School Arts, Bristol with the 2023 - 24 group of artists. The group created their own set of cards that were reflective of their 'gestures of practice'.
The workshop ended with games 'knots' 'catch the dragons tail', taken from the 1970's book New Games, play hard, play fair, nobody hurt.
