Unearthing Stories with Little Green Pig
‘Unearthing Stories’ is a creative heritage project by Little Green Pig and visual artist Eva Jonas, Writer Georgina Aboud and Sound Artist Sarah Sayeed exploring the history of Saddlescombe Farm in the South Downs which dates back to 1630.
During the project, a group of 20 children from Brighton and Hove participated in workshops focussing on bringing to life lesser-told tales from the farm and surrounds.
Snippet from Eva's reflections on the project:
The other artists and I began the project by spending time on-site to unravel key areas of interest, finding mutual threads across photography, writing, and sound. I was particularly interested in the forms and traces present in the land at the farm and where these shapes and textures were replicated in the objects that were kept. This developed into conversations with Georgina about the non-human presence at the site and how these things are observers of the people and history of the farm. The 1,000-year-old lime tree in the ancient woodland at Newtimber Holt, the dew ponds, and a 17th-century donkey wheel then became the foundations for planning workshops around human and non-human ‘voices’, mapping the farm using creative tools and exploring what the ‘gesture’ of the children’s characters looked like.
Eva created a double sided zine that weaved together the characters stories with snippets focusing on a day in the life at the farm, the food they make, friends they have and secrets they hold.
